SLIM RIVER, PERAK, 23 August 2026 — The Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH), Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), organised a community service and knowledge transfer for the Orang Asli community at Sungai Bil, Slim River, Perak. The one-day outreach programme brought together 19 TAR UMT lecturers with residents of the village, in collaboration with Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA), to share knowledge, foster goodwill and create meaningful learning experiences for the local community.
The programme aimed to conduct interactive basic English classes for children and adults within the community to strengthen their daily communication skills, as well as to encourage the sharing of knowledge and to strengthen ties between the university and the Orang Asli community through community service activities.
In addition, the interaction exposed participants to the culture, customs, history and traditional heritage of the Orang Asli community, while fostering respect, understanding and appreciation for their cultural diversity.
The delegation departed from the TAR UMT campus at 7.00 am and arrived at Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Bil at 9.00 am, where the programme opened with a welcome speech from the village head, Tok Batin Yusof followed by an address from the Dean of FSSH, Dr Karthiyani Shanmugam. The morning continued with a lively children's games segment and light refreshments, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the day's activities.
Programme highlights included a conversational English session, followed by an inspirational sharing session, “Sesi Inspirasi dan Perkongsian bersama Mahasiswa,” through a video presentation covering the student learning experience, educational opportunities and career pathways, encouraging the young participants to dream big for their futures. The children also took part in a creative drawing and presentation activity, “When I Grow Up, I Want to Be…”, where they illustrated their aspirations by presenting their drawings to the group
The programme reflects TAR UMT's continued commitment to community engagement and its efforts to extend educational outreach to underserved communities, in line with the university's broader social responsibility initiatives.
